Höstens skuggor (1931) is the third installment in Agnes von Krusenstjerna's suite of novels Fröknarna von Pahlen, in which she continues to explore complex relationships and social norms in early 20th-century Sweden.

In Höstens skuggor, Angela returns to Småland to stay with Petra at Eka Manor. In the fall of 1912, an itinerant preacher arrives and takes up residence with the tenant and his wife Adèle. The love-struck Adèle tries to seduce the preacher, which leads to complications and jealousy. At the same time, Petra is attracted to the young tenant farmer Tord, which further complicates relations at the manor. The novel depicts the emotional conflicts of those involved and the social tensions that arise in their quest for love and self-realization.
