Grandmother and Our Lord (1921) by Hjalmar Bergman is a deeply human novel about the course of life, the dissolution of the family and reflections on a long life. Through the eyes of grandmother Agnes Borck, the history of a family is depicted with humor, sharpness and sadness.
In Grandmother and Our Lord, we meet Agnes Borck, who on her 75th birthday looks back on her life and talks to Our Lord, symbolically sitting at her bedside. The novel tells the story of the Borck family over the last 60 years, a story of joy, sadness and great change. When grandmother decides to sell the family farm and leave the inheritance to her grandchildren, her sanity is questioned by the remaining relatives. The novel captures the complex relationships within a family and highlights the unpredictability of life. Among the characters is circus performer Nathan, later the protagonist of Jac the Clown. With its rich narrative style and psychological depth, Grandmother and Our Lord is one of Hjalmar Bergman's most beloved works.
