Google Consent Mode version 2 is an updated version of Google's consent framework that allows website owners to customize how Google services use cookies and collect data based on visitors' consent.

As of March 2024, Google Consent Mode version 2 will be mandatory for all users of Google's ad services. This update is essential to comply with data protection laws such as the GDPR.

Abicart now supports Google Consent Mode V2. It is important that you enable this so that measurement and advertising via Google is not negatively affected.

Do you use Google's different ad services?

In March 2024, it will be a requirement from Google to have a cookie banner with support for Google Consent Mode V2 implemented if you use Google's various ad services. Without an approved cookie solution, measurement and advertising will no longer be possible.

According to Google, the deadlines for Google Consent Mode in 2024 are as follows
  • March. Store owners using retargeting and audience data will require the new settings offered by Google Consent Mode v2.
  • July. Third-party cookies are completely blocked in Chrome
  • By the end of the year , Google will require conversion tracking to be included in Google Consent Mode v2.

Who is affected by Google Consent Mode V2?

Those affected by Google Consent Mode version 2 include stores that use Google services such as Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Google Ads and other Google marketing services on their websites. It will mainly apply to those who use retargeting and audience data, according to Google, conversion tracking will also be included from the end of 2024 .

What do I need to do as a store owner in Abicart?

Enable support for Google Consent Mode V2 and update your policy to reflect how you collect and use data. This will help you meet legal requirements and protect your customers' privacy.

You enable the setting in your theme (Appearance -> Themes -> edit the active theme) under the extensions tab and Google before March 2024. Check both of these checkboxes:

ad_user_data is used to determine if the user gives their consent for Google's advertising purposes. This will be set to "granted" when the user actively consents to their data being shared with Google through a consent banner interaction.

ad_personalization controls whether the data can be used for ad personalization (e.g. for remarketing). It can only be set to "granted" when users specifically consent (via the consent banner) to their data being shared with Google for the purpose of ad personalization.

It is up to each store owner to activate these new parameters, provided you use Google's ad services and your store is affected.All stores will be set to the most restrictive settings automatically.

Also remember to enable the consent dialog box so that you require consent. With this turned on, the visitor is forced to either accept or deny consent.

Without it, your visitors can enter your site without making any choices.
