Thanks to digital publishing, your audience can access their favorite content - such as magazines, newspapers, journals and books - anytime and anywhere in the world. But some publishing terms can be confusing when they encounter them for the first time. If you are a new publisher, this guide is for you. Here's a cheat sheet of useful and frequently used words in the publishing world.
Mobile optimization
Mobile optimization is adapting a website for mobile devices such as smartphones. Mobile optimization allows people to easily read and navigate through content from the small screens of mobile devices.
CRM
CRM is the acronym for Customer Relationship Management. CRM systems manage large-scale customer data and interactions. They collect customer information in a large database so that users can easily access it. With more subscribers comes more responsibility. Good CRM systems allow publishers to manage their subscribers with effective organizational tools. To make your publications successful, a CRM should also allow you to create customized email campaigns and use analytics to track statistics and subscriber activity.
SEO
SEO is the acronym for search engine optimization. . SEO is the process of increasing a web page's visibility in search engines, usually with keywords or phrases. For example, the top websites that appear on a Google search results page have used SEO more effectively than others because they show up first. SEO can significantly improve your publication's search engine visibility. Many digital publishing platforms allow you to choose which keywords or phrases from your publication appear on search engines. SEO's goal is to increase your publication's traffic and get more views, so you need to choose the right keywords!
HTML
HTML is the acronym for HyperText Markup Language. HTML is coding accompanied by "tags" that tell browsers how to display text, images and more on a web page. The latest version is HTML5. An ideal digital publishing platform supports HTML5 interactivity for your publications. It is considered the 'language of the internet' and allows multimedia elements such as audio, video and pop-ups to be easily interacted with from mobile devices. Before HTML, browsers required third-party plugins to view media (which meant downloading additional software). This is no longer an issue with HMTL, so make sure your publishing platform of choice supports it.
Hotspot
A hotspot is a clickable area on an image that is linked (or hyperlinked) to another action. These actions can take users to other websites, other parts of the same website, play audio or video, and more. All for the sake of convenience! Hotspots in your publications can 1) be used in a table of contents page to save readers time 2) open new websites (like your own) so readers can find more information or 3) provide a more detailed view of a selected image. Hotspots allow readers to find all the information they need directly from your publication or any external website.
Embedding
Embedding uses computer code to place external multimedia files (such as audio or video) into a web page. The user can then interact with these embedded files without leaving the page. Digital publishing allows you to embed your entire publication on your website, blog and social media channels with simple codes! And complementing your text with embedded video and audio files is a great way to get your readers more engaged. So if you're looking for more exposure and engagement, embedding is your best friend.
API
API is the acronym for Application Programming Interface. An API is a set of programming rules that determine how one application can interact with another. If you have your website or app, APIs allow you to integrate them with digital publishing platforms. Why? Because doing so streamlines how you can create publications, embed them, and more. In other words, a good API makes creating publications easier and can save you a lot of time.
Digital publishing makes the convenience of sharing valuable information with your target audience easier than previous print publishing methods. Hopefully we have added some new words to your dictionary, wishing you good luck with your publishing career!
