"Today I live on my hobby!"

Kristina Andersson runs the shop Trådspira Idé och Design half a mile outside Mora. She is self-employed and has been selling jewelry for home and garden since 2008. In short, Kristina makes all sorts of forged arrangements - everything from candle lanterns to facade decorations, of course with a touch of Dalarna.
- It all actually started with a burnout, where the garden was what healed me. Then when winter came, I realized that there is actually not much left in the garden that touches anymore and there somewhere the idea for my garden jewelry was born, says Kristina.

Started at home at the kitchen table

- 2008 was probably when the company really took off. I was exhibiting at a trade fair in Stockholm and people stopped by my stand and wondered what I was selling. At that time, we didn't decorate our gardens in the same way as we do today, so the concept of 'garden jewelry' was relatively unknown," she says.

She started at home at the kitchen table, but as the business grew, it went from being housed in a small workroom at home to finally moving to a premises just outside Mora, where she is based today. According to Kristina, the disadvantage of running the business a bit outside the city center is obvious:
- "It's almost impossible for spontaneous customers to find one here, because they don't pass the locomotive stables where I'm based."

The solution? An online shop, of course! Are you also keen to start a webshop? Click here!

"It just works"

In the fall of 2020, Kristina started her webshop via Abicart.
- It's the best thing I've done, for sure! I have gained a completely different window to the outside world and, in addition, it becomes clearer for the customer as well. Many of my customers who visit my physical store also look in the webshop first before they come here.

- I have tried another e-commerce platform before, but it has been both expensive and complicated. I think Abicart is really good. The platform is easy to work with, I get good support and it feels safe. It's fast, easy and smooth and it just works. It's worth every penny!

To get traffic to her web shop, Kristina advertises in the local newspaper, via Google Ads and Facebook. She herself is not technically inclined at all.

- No, I am completely technology-free, haha! I get some help from a technician with, among other things, Google advertising, and then Abicart has helped me a lot at the start-up of course. Otherwise, as I said, Abicart is a very simple platform to use, so you don't have to be very technical and I like that," she says.

Living on her hobby

According to Kristina, it was absolutely necessary to start the webshop.
- "Absolutely. If I hadn't started my new webshop last fall, my business probably wouldn't have survived, largely due to the pandemic. Instead, I have been able to benefit from more people shopping online. I now have the luxury of being able to make a living from what was originally just a hobby," she says.

What is the hardest part?
- "Of course, it's always difficult to get a deal, a purchase, quite simply. You need to have clear images, order and a good structure, otherwise you lose the customer. I really think that Abicart's e-commerce platform enables this in a good way.

What have you learned during your time as an e-retailer?
- That you have to be goal-oriented and humble towards customers. I have a very narrow niche with a fairly unique product and therefore the webshop, which is my window to the outside world, means a lot. All customers are equally important, large and small. Every package I send becomes part of my marketing.

Kristina gives tips!

Have you also thought about expanding your business and opening up your shop online? Here are five tips from Kristina that you might want to consider:

  1. Be patient and goal-oriented! It takes hard work and there are no shortcuts. Also, keep in mind that it will take time to build something really good.
  2. What is your message and purpose? What do you really want with your webshop? What do you want to convey? Make sure you are clear!
  3. Who is your target group? Find out where your customers are and who they are.
  4. Believe in yourself and dare! Even though it can feel both difficult and scary, it's about actually daring to take the step and invest.
  5. Have fun! It's much easier if you think positively and try to have fun, no one can take that away from you. And it's completely free!
