"Do I need to switch from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4?"
"How do I do it? When do I need to switch?"

Switching from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4 raises many questions. In this article we summarize how to proceed!

"As of July 1, 2023, Universal Analytics properties will stop processing new hits. If you are still using Universal Analytics, we recommend that you get ready to start using Google Analytics 4."

If you currently have UA-ID (Universal analytics) in your theme in Abicart, you have two choices about how to switch to GA4 (Google analytics 4). You need to decide whether you want to run GA4 in parallel with UA until 2023-07-01 or if you want to switch to (an empty) GA4 directly. Choose what feels best for you.

Note! When you switch to GA4, it will initially be empty of data. Therefore, it is good to start GA4 in parallel with UA so that GA4 has time to get some data before the transition.

Option 1)

Run UA & GA4 in parallel: Keep the measurement ID for UA via your theme in Abicart. Add GA4 via Google Tag Manager (GTM). When you have added GA4 via tag manager, you also need to set up Enhanced e-commerce to get sales statistics in GA4. You can do this yourself using the manual below. If you would rather have help with Enhanced e-commerce, you can contact Abicart customer service and have it set up by us for a one-time cost - link to offer

Option 2)

Switch to GA4 directly: Enter the measurement ID for GA4 in the theme >> Save.

Note that this means that you remove the connection between UA & the webshop. No more data will be sent to UA.

Important: The reports you get in each UA & GA4 will not look the same. This is because UA collects data in "sessions" while GA4 collects data via "events". We recommend that you read up on the difference between UA and GA4 yourself. Take help from Google articles and other comparisons and summaries that can be found online.
